1314
This year, in 1314, in France, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay,
was killed, and was said to have cursed the Pope and the King while he was being burned.
A month later, the Pope, Clement V, died
and lightning struck the Church where his body lay, burning it.
The Tour de Nesle scandal rocked the French monarchy.
On a visit, Philip IV's daughter, Isabella, Queen of England,
accused her sisters-in-law of adulterous affairs.
The women were imprisoned
and their paramours were tortured and executed.
A few months later, the King, Philip IV,
died of a stroke while hunting.
Robert the Bruce
won back Scotland’s independence at the Battle of Bannockburn,
Exeter College was founded at Oxford,
and the capital of Norway was moved from Bergen to Oslo.
This has been This Year: 1314.
